Game of Thrones Filming Locations, Croatia & Spain

Game of Thrones Filming Locations, Croatia & Spain

Minh and I had always heard good things about Game of Thrones and we actually attempted to watch it a couple years ago. However, we just couldn’t get through the first episode as there were so many characters, and it wasn’t captivating enough for us to continue. After that attempt we never tried again, until our trip to Croatia was near.

My sister is actually a huge Game of Thrones fan, and when I first asked her to meet us on our journey, Croatia was a place she’d been wanting to visit due to the show. Because we’d heard such good reviews of Game of Thrones from so many people, and we knew we’d be visiting the filming location of the show, Minh and I decided to give it another chance.

This time, we totally got sucked into the show and managed finishing up all 5 seasons by the time we got to Dubrovnik! I’m glad we watched the show, as it made us enjoy our time in Croatia that much more.

Game of Thrones used Croatia as a main filming location for Seasons 3-5 with various locations in Split, Lokrum Island, Dubrovnik and more.

Dubrovnik is actually the setting for King’s Landing, so there are numerous filming locations within the old city walls. According to our tour guide in Dubrovnik, the show actually helped increase Croatia’s tourism by 15%.  There are numerous companies in Dubrovnik that offer Game of Thrones tours, so there is definitely an audience for it!

For those who aren’t caught up with the show, this post may have spoilers, so this is your warning! Don’t proceed if you haven’t completed Season 5!

Here are some of the various and recognizable filming locations for GoT that we managed to visit.

CROATIA

SPLIT

Diocletian’s Palace in Split was used for various scenes in Seasons 4 and 5.  Most recognizable is probably where Khaleesi keeps her dragons.

LOKRUM ISLAND

Lokrum Island is located a short boat ride from Dubrovnik.  It was also used for the city of Quarth

While exploring Lokrum Island, we randomly found a little Game of Thrones exhibition and found this!

(Don’t mind our hiking/beach attire, we weren’t planning on sitting on an iron throne that day…lol)

DUBROVNIK

Dubrovnik is the most recognizable with various filming locations, as it’s used as the setting for King’s Landing.

    • Fort Lovrijenac, which is located just outside the old town walls of Dubrovnik is the setting of various scenes including the Red Keep, tournament for King Joffrey’s naming day, and the battle at Blackwater Bay.

I think that group may have actually been on a Game of Thrones tour.

      • Pile Gate, located right as you enter into old town Dubrovnik

The door that King Joffrey escaped through during the battle

      • Homeland War Museum, houses the stairs where Khaleesi asks the Spice King for boats at the Rector’s Palace

      • Minceta Tower, accessible when you walk the walls of Old Town Dubrovnik – House of the Undying

      • Roman Stairs, where Cersei does her Walk of Shame through town

It’s amazing to know that the show has managed to film in such highly populated and public areas of Old Town Dubrovnik, which probably makes it that much more appealing for fans of the show to visit!

SPAIN

While in Croatia, we learned that GoT also did some filming in Spain, where we managed to visit a few of the sites.

  • The Alcazar in Seville was used as the water palace of the Kingdom of Dorne

  • The Roman bridge in Cordoba is the setting for the Long Bridge to Volantis

Game of Thrones has also filmed in Morocco, which we’ll be headed to during our travels.  Maybe we’ll be able to add in Yunkai and Pentos to our list of Game of Thrones filming locations we’ve visited!

When putting this post together I wasn’t even sure if we’d visited a lot of the filming locations.  There are some diehard fans that actually reenact scenes from the show and match up the camera angle and everything!  Just gathering up photos we took from our sightseeing, we seemed to have managed to capture quite a lot. The show uses the great architecture and buildings a lot of these cities have, so you don’t really need to try hard to locate a majority of them.  It’s pretty cool to see it in person and adds a little more fun to our sightseeing adventures!  Glad we decided to stick with the show and are excited to see what other great filming locations they’ll use for the next season.  Hope you enjoyed our makeshift Game of Thrones tour! 🙂

Update: We also visited Yunkai and Pentos in Morocco!

lol you guys are such nerds…looking up locations where it was filmed. your post makes you guys sound like die hard fans picking travel locations just because that’s where the show’s filmed (not the case, i know) haha.

i wanted to go to lokrum but didn’t have time.

The truth is no matter where you go, in dubrovnik esp., they had filmed there so it worked out well. Most of the time we were just enjoying the beauty.

What is hard to capture in these pictures is the beauty of the water surrounding such a populated old structure as it was a very very clear deep marine blue that you dont see on the pacific.

Haha yea it totally does, but we actually looked up the locations after we visited them and the post came together so nicely! 🙂 Lokrum was definitely a favorite place of mine, future post on that to come!
